Description of the competition

The Institute of Design Montréal, with the collaboration of the professional associations (Association des designers industriels du Québec, Société des designers d'intérieur du Québec, Société des designers graphiques du Québec) and the newspaper Les Affaires, presents its fourth Institute of Design Montréal Awards competition. Once again, the Institute of Design Montréal is proud to reward the most outstanding design products and projects. The winners share a total of $55,000 in prizes, including a Grand Prize of $25,000 for the best product or project, all categories combined. The sum of $5,000, a trophy and a certificate is given to the winner in each of the following categories: Consumer Products (General Public); Specialized Products; Interior Design; Multidisciplinary Projects; Graphic Design and Design and New Technologies. Certificates are also presented to the enterprises.

To be eligible for the 2001 competition, the products and projects had to have been carried out and completed in Quebec after December 1998 by a designer, a designer-enterprise partnership or an enterprise with an integrated design department. In the initial phase, a specialized panel was formed for each of the categories to screen the entries. Then, on March 10, 2001 the grand jury of the Institute of Design Montréal, composed of well-known members of the design and business communities, met for the final selection. The entries were evaluated for the quality of their design in terms of innovation, esthetics, human factors, technology and environmental considerations.

One hundred thirty-four entries were received from which the specialized panels selected 35. These were presented to the jury of the IDM on March 10, 2001.
